For children at the initial levels of exploratory development, ages 4-8 years, the North Star Ballet offers a Creative Movement Program based on natural movement rather than formal dance styles.
The program provides an easily accessible and personal movement vocabulary based on understanding concepts such as space, time and energy. Dancers develop flexibility, strength, coordination and learn to work cooperatively with each other and to accept individual differences. They develop an aesthetic dimension to the educational process that carries into adulthood.
Ruth Merriman, our Creative Movement Director, presents a new dance element each week. We utilize the core processes of doing, perceiving, knowing, understanding, relating and evaluating. These skills form an important foundation for future curriculum development in dance and in all other learning.
We hold two semesters each year, beginning at the end of August running through mid-December, and January through mid-May. Classes are one hour per week, with make-up classes available with instructor permission for excused absences.
In early summer, we offer several one week Creative Dance Camps for children aged 4-8 years and 9-12 years. The camps are 9 am to noon, five days each week. This year’s theme is Sleeping Beauty. Children create dances, fabricate costumes and present all to parents in a showing at the end of the week. Space is limited, so reserve your child’s spot now.
